The Dalit PhD student at IIT-Kanpur allegedly committed suicide in his hostel room.

A Dalit student, pursuing PhD from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur allegedly committed suicide in his hostel room on Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as Bheem Singh, a third-year student of PhD in the mechanical engineering department of IIT-Kanpur.

The victim belonged to Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh. On Wednesday, he allegedly hanged himself from the ceiling of his hostel room.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Akhilesh Kumar said that the victim's, Bheem Singh, friends told police that he was suffering from severe stress.

Deputy Director of IIT-Kanpur Manindra Agarwal said, "A letter has been recovered and is in the possession of the forensic team of the police."

Police are yet to ascertain the exact reason for the alleged suicide and an investigation is underway.
