A 25-year-old contractual employee of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) here allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his living room late on Monday night.

Police officials said the body of Kishor Barua was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his living room in the IIT campus.

Kishor, who worked as a cook in Manas Hostel of the IIT on contractual basis, is a resident of Khehenipara village under Baihata Chariali police station in Kamrup district.

“The incident took place around 10 pm on Monday. We were informed late about the incident. We found the body hanging from the ceiling fan in his living room in IIT campus,” officer in-charge of North Guwahati Police Station Upen Mohan told 

Northeast Now.

Mohan said no suicide note was found in the room. “The reason behind his suicide is yet to be ascertained,” he said. Police have sent Kishor’s body to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem examination.

A post-graduate student of IIT-Guwahati student allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room In May in 2016. Sarkar Intekhab Alam, who hailed from Murshidabad in West Bengal,  was found dead by some students of his hostel in the IIT campus.

In 2014, an Electronics and Communication Engineering student of IIT Guwahati was found dead behind his three-storey hostel building. The police had maintained that the student, Tushar Yadav (19), a resident of Gurgaon in Haryana committed suicide on Saturday night by jumping from the hostel rooftop.

At least six suicide cases have been reported in the institution so far.

Resident of Sector 39 in Gurgaon, Tushar was a first-semester student of electronics and communication engineering at IIT Guwahati, when he was found dead on campus on the intervening night of September 13-14, 2014. Assam Police suspected Tushar had committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of his hostel.

But his parents insisted cops had neglected crucial pieces of evidence. A case was finally registered against unidentified accused on September 26, 2014, at Jalukbari police station, Kamrup district, Guwahati, under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 302 (murder) of IPC, vide FIR number 710/2014.

In August 2016, Assam Police filed a closure report. It read: “The … incident is not the outcome of criminal act of others … though Yadav was a brilliant student, he could not cope with pressure of higher study and there is every possibility he was suffering from mental depression. He might have believed he wouldn’t be able to fulfil expectations which may be the reason for ending life.”

On December 9, 2016, Tushar’ father filed objections to the report. Questions he raised included: Photograph of the site obtained from police show hook and zip of Tushar’s trousers, and buttons of his shirt, were open. There were visible scars on Tushar’s body that hinted he was physically abused before death.

In it’s eight-page verdict, the court of ACJM accused the probe agency of not exploring contradictory statements of witnesses. It dismissed the investigating officer’s contention that Tushar was ill and couldn’t cope with academic pressure, or that no one had heard the sound of the body falling from great height between 12.30am and 1am, especially with the IIT canteen nearby being open till 3am. The autopsy report shows death was due to injury to the vertebrae, but in the photograph, he could be seen with a bent knee, lying on one side. Also, the suicide note was not in Tushar’s handwriting.

The court’s verdict has castigated the police report on several other counts. Tushar’s illness, which is it’s main focus, was for urinary tract infection and typhoid, for which he was in a hospital. But at the time, his doctor did not notice him suffering from mental depression.

 “The court has stated the probe was one-sided, I hope the people responsible will be behind bars soon,” Tushar’s father said.

A B Tech student is believed to have committed suicide in the morning leaving the Guwahati IIT in utter shocked on Friday.
Identified as Ujjal Salil, the body of student from Bihar was found at the campus early in the morning. The inmate of the Brahmaputra Hostel was suspected to have jumped to the ground.

Police recovered the body and investigation is going on. This is the third such tragic incident at the country’s premier seat of science and technology in Guwahati during the last 12 months.

Last year in the same month i.e. on 14/09/2014 our son Tushar Yadav was also found dead behind his room in Kameng Hostel, before we reached there from Delhi IIT Guwahati declared it as suicide. Same thing happened in today"s case.  After our strong oppose case of conspiracy and murder was registered since then Police and IIT Guwahatidid nothing at yet, we at our level providing evidences, activities of suspects but all in vain. You the media also continuously describing as suicide why? On that day you the media failed to did your duty to find out facts then wrote such thing. If you did that in so hurry then why not you published the story of conspiracy and murder. This IIT has continue taking life of young engineers no media no ngo no political system no UGC no NHRC no Court take notice of it. We the grieved parents of Tushar can understand the loss that the family of Ujjal Shailabh have to bear through whole life, what else we can say   Narender Singh ( Gurgaon)

Guwahati, Sept. 18: An IIT Guwahati student was found dead near a hostel on the campus today, with the preliminary police probe suggesting suicide. The body of Ujjwal Shailabh, 24, who was from Bihar, was found face down in a pool of blood near the four-storey Brahmaputra Hostel around 11.30am by some students, said Labanu Konwar, the assistant registrar (public relations) of IIT Guwahati. The students reported the matter to the IIT authorities, who informed the police. IIT sources said Ujjwal, a final-semester student of BTech in mathematics and computing, was depressed because of poor academic performance. The police suspect the student, who stayed on the ground floor of the hostel, might have jumped from the roof. No suicide note has been found in the hostel room of Ujjwal, who hailed from Triveniganj town in Bihar's Supoul district, the police said. This is the third suspected suicide at IIT Guwahati in the past year. Tushad Yadav, a first-semester electronics and communication student, and Shoaib Ahmed, a second-semester MSc student, were found dead on the campus in September last year and March this year, respectively. While Tushad was suspected to have jumped to death, Shoaib was found hanging in his hostel room. The officer in charge of North Guwahati police station, M.M. Mahanta, said: "The preliminary investigation suggests that Ujjwal committed suicide. Students close to him have said he was depressed for some time." The IIT sources said Ujjwal's academic performance "had dipped" and he could be depressed because of that. Assistant registrar Konwar said Ujjwal's family had been informed and his relatives were expected to reach IIT Guwahati tomorrow. Ujjwal had taken admission to the IIT in 2009. The IIT sources said that since the institute was set up in 1995, "six or seven" students were suspected to have committed suicide. "We don't have the exact number of unnatural deaths," Konwar said. "All I can say is that this is the third instance in the past year." He said IIT Guwahati had four psychologists to counsel students. The institute has more than 5,500 students.

The recent death of Tussar Yadav inside IIT-Guwahati campus seems to have shrouded in mystery. The IITian’s parents have alleged it a murder case and that they are unhappy with the police investigation which has yet to ascertain the real circumstances where the Gurgaon student died on September 14.  

In an appeal sent to Assam Times, his parents rued that only a CBI probe would be able to unearth the truth.  They further alleged that the suicide note handed over to them bears no mention of date and signature whereas the IIT-G authorities have cited depression quoting the note "Hi mummy papa this is Tushar, I want to tell you about my story. I was in full depression over 2 months. It is worst".

 “This is the only document taken as proof of depression by the IIT authority.  Therefore, it creates a doubt in our minds as to who directed whom to search for the said note and under what circumstances.

Moreover the handwriting of the note and the handwriting of Tushar do not seem to match at all. The same needs to be investigated by the competent authorities,” alleged Tushar’s parents.  

 They find it utter surprising that there was no open injury, abrasion, contusion even after a fall from the height of more than 40 feet.  The post-mortem report merely states the cause of death to be “death due to damage to back bone”. The position and condition of his  body does not indicate as if he had jumped off from a height of 40 feet!

They rued that these circumstance suggest that this is not a case of suicide as it was maintained by Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati but there is something more sinister which has been brewing up at the Guwahati campus.

 An Electronics and Communication Engineering student of IIT Guwahati was found dead behind his three-storey hostel building on Sunday, the police said.

The body of Tushar Yadav (19), a resident of Gurgaon in Haryana, was found lying in a pool of blood around 7:30 am.

The police maintain that the student committed suicide on Saturday night by jumping from the hostel rooftop.

Police also found a note addressed to his parents which says he was suffering from depression for the past two months.

“In the suicide note, the student has apologised to his parents,” police said. They are waiting for the fingerprints report.

The post-mortem was conducted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Students and faculty of IIT Guwahati, which is on the outskirts of the city, were shocked.

His friends said he has been suffering from depression since long, but they were not aware of the reasons, though Yadav was good at studies. 

This is the second suicide case in IIT Guwahati in the last six months. Shoaib Ahmed, a second semester M.Sc. student from West Bengal, hanged himself from the ceiling fan of his hostel room in March. 

At least five suicide cases have been reported in the institution so far.

IIT Guwahati is in the top 100 young world universities' list published by London-based Times Higher Education magazine, becoming the first Indian institute to receive the accolade.  The institute was established on the basis of the Assam Accord.

Police said they had found a letter in Tushar's room, purportedly written by him and addressed to his parents, in which he said he had been suffering from severe depression for the past two months. Initial investigations showed the handwriting matched Tushar's.

Although it appeared to be a suicide case, police said they were looking at other angles too. IIT-G authorities ruled out the possibility of Tushar being a victim of ragging. The family said Tushar spoke to his mother hours before his death and appeared normal.

"We found out Yadav was not in his hostel room last night," said Labanu Konwar, public relations officer, IIT-G. "His roommate called him on his mobile around midnight but no one answered. His body was found this morning by a canteen worker."

After police informed the parents, Tushar's father Narendra Singh reached Guwahati in the afternoon. A relative who accompanied Singh to Guwahati said the student had called his parents on Saturday night and had spoken normally.

"He called up his mother last night and said he was fine," said the relative. "He was down with typhoid a few months ago and he told his mother he was better now."

This is the second case of suspected suicide on the IIT-G campus this year. In March, S M Shoib Ahmed, an MSc maths student from West Bengal, was found to have hanged himself from a ceiling fan in his hostel.

"The student took the extreme step in the wee hours today. He left a suicide note addressed to his parents. It mainly stated that he was suffering from depression for the last two months and today was its end," a police officer said.

He has been identified as Tushar Yadav, hailing from Gurgaon in Haryana, and was a student of Electronics Communication and Engineering department at Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati, police said.

Yadav was a resident at the Kameng hostel and he jumped from the it's fourth floor.

The body has been sent for post-mortem and the family has been informed about the incident, police said.
