A 20-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh, pursuing B Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) at Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati (IIT-G) allegedly committed suicide on Monday.

The B Tech fourth semester student, identified as Pannem Pavan Siddardha, reportedly committed suicide in his hostel room in the campus by hanging himself from a ceiling fan. The reason behind the suicide is yet to be ascertained.

In September last year, a first year B.Tech student, committed suicide by hanging herself for a ceiling fan.

18-year-old Nagashree S.C. from Karnataka, who was pursuing Mechanical Engineering, left a note behind saying she wanted to be a teacher, not an engineer.

Earlier, a couple of students and employee have committed suicide at the IIT-G.

In August last year, a 25-year-old contractual employee identified as Kishor Barua was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his living room in the IIT campus.

Sarkar Intekhab Alam, a post-graduate student of IIT-Guwahati allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room in May in 2016. Sarkar Intekhab Alam hailed from Murshidabad in West Bengal.

In 2014, 19-year-old Tushar Yadav, an Electronics and Communication Engineering student of the institute, was found dead behind his three-storey hostel building. According to police, Tushar, who hailed from Gurgaon in Haryana committed suicide by jumping from the hostel rooftop.

At least seven cases of suicide have been reported in the institution so far.

Guwahati: The family of IIT Guwahati student Tushar Yadav, who was found dead in a hostel in September 2014, appeared vindicated, when the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) of Assam observed on January 20 that there is a strong possibility the Gurgaon boy’s death was not suicide as claimed by cops, and ordered a concrete probe into the matter by a competent official under supervision of Assam DGP. Tushar’s parents Narender Singh and Bindu Yadav had alleged their son had been killed after being ragged.

Resident of Sector 39 in Gurgaon, Tushar was a first-semester student of electronics and communication engineering at IIT Guwahati, when he was found dead on campus on the intervening night of September 13-14, 2014. Assam Police suspected Tushar had committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of his hostel.

But his parents insisted cops had neglected crucial pieces of evidence. A case was finally registered against unidentified accused on September 26, 2014, at Jalukbari police station, Kamrup district, Guwahati, under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 302 (murder) of IPC, vide FIR number 710/2014.

In August 2016, Assam Police filed a closure report. It read: “The … incident is not the outcome of criminal act of others … though Yadav was a brilliant student, he could not cope with pressure of higher study and there is every possibility he was suffering from mental depression. He might have believed he wouldn’t be able to fulfil expectations which may be the reason for ending life.”

On December 9, 2016, Tushar’ father filed objections to the report. Questions he raised included: Photograph of the site obtained from police show hook and zip of Tushar’s trousers, and buttons of his shirt, were open. There were visible scars on Tushar’s body that hinted he was physically abused before death.

In it’s eight-page verdict, the court of ACJM accused the probe agency of not exploring contradictory statements of witnesses. It dismissed the investigating officer’s contention that Tushar was ill and couldn’t cope with academic pressure, or that no one had heard the sound of the body falling from great height between 12.30am and 1am, especially with the IIT canteen nearby being open till 3am. The autopsy report shows death was due to injury to the vertebrae, but in the photograph, he could be seen with a bent knee, lying on one side. Also, the suicide note was not in Tushar’s handwriting.

The court’s verdict has castigated the police report on several other counts. Tushar’s illness, which is it’s main focus, was for urinary tract infection and typhoid, for which he was in a hospital. But at the time, his doctor did not notice him suffering from mental depression.

 “The court has stated the probe was one-sided, I hope the people responsible will be behind bars soon,” Tushar’s father said.

IIT Guwahati student found dead behind hostel, cops say suicide

Guwahati, Sept 15: An electronics and communication engineering student of IIT Guwahati, hailing from Haryana, was found dead behind his three-storey hostel building on Sunday, police said. The body of Tushar Yadav (19) was found lying in a pool of blood at around 7.30 am.

Police investigators say that the student committed suicide on Saturday night by jumping from the building rooftop. Police also found a note addressed to his parents which says he was suffering from depression for the past two months. "In the suicide note, the student has apologised to his parents," police said, adding they are waiting for the fingerprints report.

The student was a resident of Gurgaon in Haryana. His father, Narender Singh, rushed here after getting information. Post-mortem examination of the body was conducted at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

This is the second such incident in the IIT-G this year. Shoaib Ahmed, a second semester M.Sc. student from West Bengal, had hanged himself from the ceiling fan of his hostel room in March.IANS ....
