A 20-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh, pursuing B Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) at Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati (IIT-G) allegedly committed suicide on Monday.

The B Tech fourth semester student, identified as Pannem Pavan Siddardha, reportedly committed suicide in his hostel room in the campus by hanging himself from a ceiling fan. The reason behind the suicide is yet to be ascertained.

In September last year, a first year B.Tech student, committed suicide by hanging herself for a ceiling fan.

18-year-old Nagashree S.C. from Karnataka, who was pursuing Mechanical Engineering, left a note behind saying she wanted to be a teacher, not an engineer.

Earlier, a couple of students and employee have committed suicide at the IIT-G.

In August last year, a 25-year-old contractual employee identified as Kishor Barua was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his living room in the IIT campus.

Sarkar Intekhab Alam, a post-graduate student of IIT-Guwahati allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room in May in 2016. Sarkar Intekhab Alam hailed from Murshidabad in West Bengal.

In 2014, 19-year-old Tushar Yadav, an Electronics and Communication Engineering student of the institute, was found dead behind his three-storey hostel building. According to police, Tushar, who hailed from Gurgaon in Haryana committed suicide by jumping from the hostel rooftop.

At least seven cases of suicide have been reported in the institution so far.

A 25-year-old contractual employee of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) here allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his living room late on Monday night.

Police officials said the body of Kishor Barua was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his living room in the IIT campus.

Kishor, who worked as a cook in Manas Hostel of the IIT on contractual basis, is a resident of Khehenipara village under Baihata Chariali police station in Kamrup district.

“The incident took place around 10 pm on Monday. We were informed late about the incident. We found the body hanging from the ceiling fan in his living room in IIT campus,” officer in-charge of North Guwahati Police Station Upen Mohan told

Mohan said no suicide note was found in the room. “The reason behind his suicide is yet to be ascertained,” he said. Police have sent Kishor’s body to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem examination.

The police had maintained that the student, Tushar Yadav (19), a resident of Gurgaon in Haryana committed suicide on Saturday night by jumping from the hostel rooftop.

At least six suicide cases have been reported in the institution so far.

This was the status message of 22-year-old Sarkar Intekhab Alam, a post-graduate student at IIT Guwahati, who allegedly committed suicide. 

He was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room late on Friday night. A suicide note found by the police said that no one was responsible for his death.

Intekhab was pursuing a post-graduate degree in Physics at IIT Guwahati. He was a photography enthusiast and also an avid reader of philosophy. A graduate in Physics from Jadavpur University, he hailed from a small town in West Bengal, Behrampore; it was Intekhab's dream to pursue higher studies from the IIT. "He was extremely passionate about Physics. He wanted to pursue his post-graduation from IIT, and his dream was fulfilled when he made it to IIT Guwahati. He never showed any signs of academic pressure. We are still in a state shock," said his cousin sister, who is also pursuing an engineering degree. The family is bereaved and yet to come to terms with news of his untimely death.  

He was supposed to appear for the first exam of the second semester from Saturday. The police are suspecting exam pressure, but his friends think otherwise.  

"He seemed completely fine. He was good at his studies and had a good CGPA in the first semester. He didn't appear to be stressed or under exam pressure so much and so to commit suicide," said a friend. He also stated that he was always interested in philosophy and life. "I cannot understand what made him take such a drastic step," he added.

His interest in photography is evident from the album uploaded on a social media site. "He loved capturing nature. His pictures of the campus were beautiful." said another classmate.

Borjhar (Guwahati), April 30: An IIT Guwahati student from Bengal was found hanging in his hostel room last night, the suspected exam-eve suicide leaving institute officials troubled over why someone with a "very good" academic performance would kill himself. Sarkar Intekhab Alam, described as "brilliant" by the IIT's director, was a second-semester student of MSc in physics. Police said the 22-year-old from Murshidabad left behind a "suicide note written in Bengali on the wall" that blamed no one for his death. Alam, who would have appeared for semester exams today, was found by his hostel mates hanging from the ceiling fan of his room in the institute's Umiam Hostel around 10 last night. "He was okay till last evening. He went to his room for a nap and asked his roommates to call him before dinner, which is generally served around 10pm. When his friends went to call him, they found him in that condition," said Labanu Konwar, the tech school's PRO. IIT sources said the door to his room was unlocked. Alam was rushed to the Guwahati Neurological Research Centre where he was declared dead on arrival. Police and forensic officials arrived at the hostel around noon today. "We saw a suicide note written in Bengali on the wall of the deceased's room," said Rana Bhuyan, in charge of Amingaon police station. The IIT's director, Gautam Biswas, said Alam was a "brilliant" student. "His cumulative performance index was above 7.5 (out of 10), which is very good. He did not have to take any pressure for this exam. We are troubled by his demise. We have teams of faculty, professional and student counsellors. All of them do routine checks and counselling sessions." Bornali Das, psychosocial consultant at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, said the more brilliant a student is, the higher the social pressure. "They tend to internalise this pressure and the depression grows within them." Alam's body was flown to Calcutta tonight after two of his relatives reached Guwahati. During last year's semester exams, Ujjwal Shailabh, a 24-year-old from Bihar, had allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the four-storey hostel.

Sarkar Intekhab Alam, who hailed from Murshidabad in West Bengal, and was pursuing a post-graduate degree in physics, was supposed to take his first semester examination from Saturday.

Police said some students of a hostel in the IIT campus in North Guwahati here saw Alam hanging from a ceiling fan in his room at around 10:30 pm on Saturday. On receiving information, police rushed him to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him as brought dead, a police officer said.

While a post-mortem examination of the body was carried out on Saturday, police also said it appeared to be prima facie a case of suicide.
