Some of the students broke Nidhin's room's window panes to find him hanging from the ceiling. Cops at the nearby Hijli outpost was called; the OC and the additional SP of Kharagpur reached the IIT campus, broke open the door to recover Nidhin's body.

West Midnapore SP Bharati Ghosh said a probe was on and that the police were examining the suicide note. The IIT campus saw the first suicide this year on January 16, when Lokesh Meena from Rajasthan jumped on the tracks and was hit by a train at Jakpur station.

The second death took place on March 30, when a youth from Andhra Pradesh, Sana Sree Raj, was found also on the train tracks, barely 500m from the IIT campus. Though the family claimed it was a murder, police called it a suicide.

Twenty-two-year-old Nidhin, a student of aerospace engineering at the prestigious IIT- Kharagpur in West Bengal, did not attend his semester examination on Friday. Hours later, when the police broke open the door to his hostel room, Nidhin was seen hanging from the ceiling fan. They found a note that read- "Let me sleep."

Nidhin, a fourth-year student hailing from Haripad in Kerala's Alappuzha district, was found hanging in his hostel room in the Nehru Hall of Residence on Friday evening, reports Aishik Chanda for The New Indian Express. 

His friends told this newspaper that Nidhin, who was one of the most studious students in the batch, had been depressed over the past few months. After Nidhin failed to attend the exam on Friday, his friends grew suspicious. When they got to his hostel room, the door was found to be locked from the inside and Nidhin did not respond to repeated calls. When the hostel authorities broke the window panes to his room after being informed by the other students, they found Nidhin hanging from the ceiling fan. 

After the police arrived, they entered the room and recovered a one-line suicide note. According to reports, the suicide note did not mention the reason for taking his own life. 

According to media reports, Nidhin is the son of Nazar, a bank manager and Nadiya, an employee at the land acquisition department of the Railways. His sister is a student at ISRO in Thiruvananthapuram. 

Nidhin's suicide is the second such case reported from IIT-Kharagpur in the past 20 days, the TNIE report states. On April 1, a student of electrical engineering from Andhra Pradesh was found dead at a railway track near the campus. 

Earlier in March, a student of IIT-Delhi had jumped off the fourth floor of his hostel room and the police had then said that the student was in depression and unable to bear the pressure.

According to the reports, 22-year-old Nidhin N was from Kerala. He used to set his alarm clock everyday for 2:00 am to wake up and study.

On Friday night, when the alarm didn't stop ringing, the students suspected something amiss and alerted the authorities. Later some of the students broke open one of the window panes and saw his body hanging from the ceiling of his room at Nehru Hall B Block.

"Let me sleep," was all that the suicide note found in his room said, reported The Times of India.

Reports said that Nidhin was the third IIT-Kharagpur student to end his life on the campus in 2017.

The Police are investigating the matter and to find a reason behind the incident.

Last month, the body of a third year electrical branch student of IIT-KGP, Sana Sri Raj (20) was found near the railway tracks near Turipara.

The body of an engineering student at IIT-Kharagpur was found hanging from inside his hostel room at the campus on Friday.

22-year-old Nidhin N, an aerospace engineering student from Kerala, was in his fourth year at the institute.

According to police, Nidhin used to set an alarm to get up early in the morning and study. Friday morning was no different, apart from the fact that the alarm woke up others in the hostel except Nidhin.

ALARM WOKE UP OTHERS 

This made the hostel authorities suspicious, and some of them broke open one of the window panes to find his body hanging from the ceiling of his ground floor room at the Nehru Hall. The police was soon informed and later broke open the door to seize the body.

IIT-Kharagpur has informed the family of the student and police have sent the body for post-mortem. The matter is being investigated.

This is the second such incident at IIT-Kharagpur in two months. Last month, the body of a student from the electrical engineering department was found dead on the railway track close to the campus.

In order to help distress students studying in India’s premier engineering institute, several campuses of Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are taking steps to help the students. The action is taken by the IITs after an increase in the number of suicides and attempt to suicide cases.

In a report published in Economic Times, counselling is being provided to the students of IIT Banaras Hindu University (BHU), IIT Madras. Parent-teachers-meeting is being held in IIT Delhi so as to increase interaction with parents. To de-stress, IIT Guwahati has formed creativity centre in the campus, where students can sing and dance.

Due to enormous academic pressure and expectations from parents, many a times students go into depression. Since last year, about 10 suicide and attempt to suicide cases have taken place in IITs.

Soumyo Mukherji, head of student affairs at IIT Bombay said, “First-year students are often found burnt out. Most students are not well-rounded personalities as a result of 18 hours of coaching for last three years before cracking JEE.”

There have been instances when students do not want to become engineers but due to pressure from parents they take admissions. G Ranga Rao, chief advisor of Mitr, a committee that deals with the cases of depression at IIT Madras said, “Focus here is more on proactive steps as most students do not come forward.”

IIT Guwahati Director Gautam Biswas said no suicide has been reported since the introduction of creativity centres at the campus.

As per Delhi-based Cosmos Institute of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, those who come to seek counselling  in the age group of 18 to 25 , 70 % are studying engineering and medicine.

Amid about 10 instances of suicide or attempted suicide since 2016, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across India have geared up to take measures to prevent these. Some of the steps taken by the IITs include parent-teacher meetings and counselling to help distressed students. 

On April 5 2017, a second-year B Tech Mining Engineering student and inmate of Ramanujan hostel of IIT  allegedly committed suicide by first setting himself ablaze and then jumping off the third floor of his hostel building. Poor performance in an examination was cited as a reason. 

In another instance, a 19-year-old student of IIT-Delhi, who was in depression as he didn't want to study engineering, allegedly attempted suicide by jumping off the terrace of a hostel building.

Sometimes, pressure from parents and peers also forces students to take up the field, even as their interest lies elsewhere. In such a scenario, though they succumb to pressure, they fail to cope up with it.

So, the idea of offering students mental assistance will especially come in handy for first-year students who often face intense pressure after clearing their joint entrance examination. 

From IIT Kharagpur’s initiative of tree-hugging movements to IIT Guwahati organising a creativity centre for students to dance, sing and play instruments, the idea is to ease the pressure off of students. Not a single suicide has been reported since the introduction of the centre, said IIT Guwahati Director Gautam Biswas. 

While IIT Delhi has included parent-teacher meetings in its curriculum, IIT Bombay has hired two counsellors and a psychiatrist to help students shake off their burden instead of taking fatal steps, reported The Economic Times.  

Bharatiya Janata Party member Prahlad Joshi said examination stress, peer pressure, cricket betting and drug abuse were causing suicidal tendencies among students.

Due to rising competition in the field of medicine and engineering, 70 per cent of students aged 18-25 in these fields visit psychiatrists, according to Cosmos Institute of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences.

IIT Kharagpur has even dedicated a Facebook page just to respond to students’ agony. They have counsellors available 24x7 to take calls from students. Of the 11,000 students on the campus, 3,000 reached out for help in 2016.

NEW DELHI: A rise in suicides and attempted suicides at India’s premier engineering institutes has turned the authorities edgy, forcing them to take a diverse range of measures to help destressed students. 

The initiatives include parent-teacher meetings — heard of only in schools — at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi to connecting with nature through tree-hugging campaigns at IIT Kharagpur and counselling at IIT Madras and IIT (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi. To help students deal with stress, IIT Guwahati has set up a creativity centre where students dance, sing and play instruments. 

IIT Bombay is adding two counsellors and a psychiatrist to its staff. Students at these prestigious institutes often spiral into depression on account of daunting academic challenges and expectations and pressure to perform from parents and peers. 

Since January 2016, there have been about a dozen suicide deaths and attempts at the IITs. 

There’s also been an increase in the number of students seeking counselling. Of the total visits made by people aged 18 to 25 seeking help, 70% are pursuing professional courses such as medicine and engineering, according to Cosmos Institute of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, a New Delhi-based provider of mental healthcare services. 

The number of students visiting CIMBS for counselling has risen by 12.5% in the past year, said Shobhana Mittal, associate consultant psychiatrist and psychotherapist. 

It’s usually the freshers who face pressure and are prone to stress, having made it into the IITs after sustained efforts, sometimes over a few years, preparing for the joint entrance examination. 

“First-year students are often found burnt out. Most students are not well-rounded personalities as a result of 18 hours of coaching for last three years before cracking JEE,” said Soumyo Mukherji, dean of student affairs at IIT Bombay. 

It’s a whole new world for students who enter the IITs after clearing the tough JEE and many are overwhelmed as they find themselves among other high performers. “It is often found that most of the depressed students at IIT Madras were pushed by parents to enter the IITs. 

In many cases, it turns out that their interests are different from engineering,” said G Ranga Rao, chief advisor of Mitr, a unit that responds to cases of depression among students at IIT Madras. 

Last year, IIT Madras split its guidance and counselling unit into Mitr and Saathi, a wing that takes proactive steps to check depression among students. 

“Focus here is more on proactive steps as most students do not come forward. We need to catch them,” Rao said. The institute, which already has two counsellors, is now looking at adding three more. 

IIT Kharagpur is implementing an innovative idea to reach out to students through programmes with a different theme each month to help them develop a positive attitude. 

January was a month of gratitude and in February, students observed 28 days of random acts of kindness. March was about helping students answer the question, ‘What are you proud of ?’ “This month it is about connecting with nature and building resilience. 

As trees are most resilient, each student will identify special trees and try connecting to them,” an IIT Kharagpur spokesperson told ET. 

IIT Kharagpur recently launched a Facebook page especially to respond to students facing pressure. 

It has round-the-clock counsellors to take calls, which touched almost 3,000 in the past year. There are over 11,000 students at IIT Kharagpur. 

The opening of the creativity centre last year at IIT Guwahati, which has over 1,500 students as of this month, appears to be working. 

“In the last one year, IIT Guwahati has not reported any suicide case. There is definitely a dip in depression among students here, especially with the opening up of this centre,” said its director, Gautam Biswas. 

With a recent suicide case haunting IIT BHU, the institute kicked off a three-week induction programme in July where students are taught art, music, painting and dance forms by the faculty from Banaras Hindu University. To ensure a smooth settling down, the students are taken around to visit monuments, temples and mosques and taught human values. 

“Induction programme helps to open up students and give them a larger view of the world. We try to teach how to embrace failure (including academics) and treat it as a minor hiccup,” said its director, Rajeev Sangal. He added that the institute is hiring counsellors. 

IIT Delhi started an academic mentoring this year where low performing juniors get special attention from seniors and faculty members. “We are in the process of formalising a schedule for students to mentor the juniors on a daily basis,” said Sangeeta Kohli, a faculty member involved with student activities at IIT Delhi.

In 1966, Joseph Weizenbaum, a computer scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, made what would today be called a chatbot. Named Eliza, after the fictional Eliza Doolittle from George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, Weizenbaum’s creation was a programme that simulated a therapist. 

Weizenbaum was less interested in people’s mental health and more in showing how clever programming could make computers — sans context and ‘intelligence’ — appear to have conversations with people.

Sample a conversation, with a typical Eliza programme:

Eliza: Please tell me what’s been bothering you.

You: Work

Eliza: I’m not sure I understand you fully.

You: i can no longer concentrate

Eliza: Can you elaborate on that ?

You: i get distracted too easily

Eliza: Do you say you get distracted too easily for some special reason ?

You: great office coffee

Eliza: Please go on….

And so on..

Eliza is designed to go on as long as power runs out or you’re bored and will diligently return a sentence that is either affirmative or interrogative. No more no less.

Soon Weizenbaum realised that people were hooked on to his creation and would spend hours, even though fully aware that they were talking to a robot that never once blazed the remotest speck of insight.

Eliza spawned many upgrades, research projects and academic research in the domain of computer science but no headway in the field of cognitive or behavioural therapy. Ironicallly, the Higginsian Weizenbaum became a critic of artificial intelligence technology and argued that too much power to machines boded ominously for people.

Circa 2017 , Bengaluru, Jo Aggarwal and Ramakant Vempati, IIT-educated engineers who have decades-long careers in consulting and management ranging from London to Iraq, realised the Eliza could be a Do-A-Lot. With the advances in AI-research and the connectivity made possible by the Web, the duo (who are also married to each other) reckon that Eliza-like bots could be focussed to help people take better care of their moods and tackle depression.

Customised app

‘Wysa,’ an app co-developed by them that has a nod to Eliza in its name, can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. Unlike Eliza, who isn’t committed to a user beyond spitting out single-phrase replies, Wysa is programmed to have customised and an elaborate tree of responses to questions ranging from “I’m feeling low today” to the critical “I feel like killing myself.”

To the former, Wysa prompts you on a conversation-course that includes asking you to “take a deep breath” or suggests some easy-to-do muscle stretching and then prods you to type out what’s precisely upsetting you. In extreme cases like the latter, Wysa can’t differentiate between those actually contemplating suicide or just being hyperbolic but will instantly remind them that they are talking to a bot and suggest a slew of counsellors or therapists they should get in touch with. It will, the next day and unprompted, ask you if you’re still feeling as miserable.

“We cannot prescribe a course of action or replace the therapist, “ says Mr. Vempati. Still in the beta phase, Wysa has had over 30,000 downloads since its launch three months ago and 70% of its users outside of India. Amulya Singh, a 23-year-old engineer, who was recommended by his therapist to try the app, says that he’s been using it for over two months and it has helped him relax. “I like it. I lost my father recently and was depressed and when I can’t reach my counsellor (at night or not scheduled) and feel anxious, I do (use it and) feel I’m talking to a person,” he tells The Hindu.

Wysa is one among a slew of bots and applications that Touchkin, the company co-founded by Mr. Vempati and mS. Aggarwal, makes. While Wysa is explicitly tuned to make people feel better and — though buffered by a team of 15 including psychologists and programmers parsing the nuances of speech — Touchkin doesn’t aim to ‘predict’ depression. The self-funded startup aims to focus on those with conditions that aren’t directly connected to mental health. Citing stats that 30% of people with diabetes, and 40-50% of those suffering from cancer or Parkinson’s, are depressed, Ms. Aggarwal says that the company has collaborated with institutions such as Apollo, the Indian Institute of Public Health and insurance companies to measure the extent of improved benefits that Wysa brings. Users, says Ms. Aggarwal, frequently share intensely personal experiences and given that the product is accessible via Facebook opens up concerns of privacy. Mr. Vempati says that people don’t require to share their name, email and contacts to use the app. While it’s possible to glean user location it’s impossible to identify people. “There are ways to make money through user engagement (having users consistently use the product) and also use the data to design public health problems,” says Ms. Aggarwal, “Anyone wanting just the data isn’t someone we wouldn’t engage with.”

The association has decided to make it mandatory for every student hostel registered with the association to attach a secret spring equipment and siren sensor to the ceiling fans of the hostel rooms.A siren sensor and a spring device that will lower ceiling fans if anyone over 20 kg tries to hang by it will be affixed to fans in hostel rooms in the coaching hub of Kota, grappling with rising cases of student suicides.

Kota, known as the capital of competitive exam coaching in the country, has seen a rise in cases of suicides by stressed out students.

Most of the suicides in the past in Kota were committed by coaching students by hanging themselves from the ceiling fans of their hostel rooms.

Keeping this in mind, the Kota Hostel Association, has come up with a decision to attach a spring equipment and a siren to the ceiling fans of the hostel rooms providing accommodation to coaching students.

The secret spring equipment attached with the ceiling fan is capable of bearing a weight of not more than 20 kg, and will come down with the expansion of the spring if anyone heavier than 20 kg tries to hang from the fan, he said.

Besides, the secret sensor with the fan will also start blaring out alerting authorities.

A firm from Gujarat has been given an order for the supply of the spring equipment and sensor and the work to attach the equipment and sensor is underway in some of the hostels. The process is expected to be over in two to three months, said Manish Jain, founder president of the Association.

The body of an electrical engineering student of IIT Khargapur was recovered from beside the railway tracks at Kharagpur on Thursday night. Police are yet to ascertain whether he committed suicide or he was hit by a train accidentally. Police said that the victim Sana Sairaz was a resident of Andhra Pradesh. He was a student of third year of the electrical engineering department of IIT Kharagpur. The victim's father came to IIT on Friday and claimed before the media that his son's death was an outcome of ragging. He alleged that Sairaz had committed suicide after failing to bear of the pain of getting ragged for the past three years. He alleged that his son had told him about the ragging that he had been facing. He had even wanted to go back home leaving his studies. But it was his father who made him understand that it was matter of some more days. If he can continue his studies keeping everything aside he would become successful in life. The police are, however, trying to ascertain whether Sairaz committed suicide or it was a mere accident. The police initiated a probe and came to know that when had he left the premises of the institution. Police came to know after preliminary investigation that Sairaz had attended some classes in the morning. But his friends didn't see him in the campus after that. Police also spoke to some local people where the body was found but are yet to come to the conclusion whether it was an accident or suicide. Police also came to know that Sairaz was an introvert. Thus, he felt shy to reveal his problems to the authorities of the institution. The  police would also go through his exercise books and diaries to find whether he had written anything which suggest that he was depressed.

The body of a student of IIT-Kharagpur was found on the rail tracks near the campus in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district.

The deceased was identified as Sana Shreeraj, a third year student of electrical engineering.

Police said college authorities claimed that mental depression drove Shreeraj to commit suicide.

Shreeraj, 20,hailed from Tekkali of Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh and stayed at Lala Lajpat Roy hostel in the campus.

Sources told HT that he went out from the hostel on Thursday night and later his body with severed head was found on the railway tracks.

Shreeraj’s father claimed that his classmates tortured him, which forced him to commit suicide.

“He (Sana) was very jolly and I do not believe that he could kill himself unless he was driven to it. He was mentally tortured by his classmates and that could lead him to end his life,” claimed Ramanna.

“I want an agency such as the CBI to investigate his death,” Rammana added.

Two days ago, Nitish Kumar Purti, a student of IIT Delhi, jumped from the fourth floor of his hostel. Police claimed he was depressed as he was unable to cope with the pressure.

In January this year, a student of IIT-Kharagpur threw himself in front of a moving train and was killed. He was a third-year civil engineering student and was allegedly suffering from depression.

AIPUR: The state government has engaged Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, to investigate the reasons behind high suicide rates and stress levels amongst students in the coaching town of Kota.

The move follows the failure of the district administration in curbing rampant suicides among IIT and medical aspirants here. The town had recorded 32 suicides in the last two years, 15 in 2016 and 17 in 2015. The city has over 1.5 lakh students enrolled in various coaching institutes from the across the country.

The TISS team is using direct and indirect research methodologies for the study, which is the first of its kind. The institute is carrying out the first round of data collection at coaching institutes, hostels, clinical psychologist, mess and other hangout places. They have prepared questionnaires and are conducting interviews to dig out information in different categories behind the suicides and stress. The second round will begin in the first week of April and the report is likely to submit to the state government in the next three months. 

"The administration is extending all the necessary support required for the report. The empirical data will help us discover the cause of suicides and stress amongst students and also solutions required for the same. The team is also studying the impact of interventions made by the local administration by introducing-Masti-ki-Pathshala and a book for them," said Ravi Kumar Surpur, district collector, Kota. The report will be submitted to the state government for formulating a policy for the same. It will be an eye opener for the parents and policy makers who have largely contributed in stressing out students.

TISS is also studying the profiles of students who had committed suicide. The youngest among them was a 14-year-old class 9 student, who was four years away from the entrance exam.

“He was in depression, apparently didn't want to study engineering. His room mate Abhinandan was taking him downstairs. And when he went to call the security guard to help him take Nitish down, the latter climbed up to the fourth floor and jumped,” Mr. Biswal said.

NEW DELHI: A first year IIT-Delhi Engineering Physics student attempted suicide by jumping from the terrace of his hostel on Wednesday morning, police said. 

Ninteen-year-old Nitish Kumar Purthick, who hails from Ranchi, was admitted to AIIMS trauma centre in a critical condition. He has received fractures in the legs among other injuries.

According to Nitish's roommate, he was depressed since couple of days and did not want to study engineering.

A 19-year-old student at the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (IIT) allegedly jumped off from the fourth floor of Vidhyanchal Hostel inside the Delhi campus, on Wednesday morning. He sustained multiple fractures in the fall and is being treated at AIIMS. His condition is now stable

This came a day after IIT was in the spotlight over a former professor confining himself along with his wife to his house in Kanpur.

Nitish Kumar Purti, an Engineering Physics student had come to IIT last year. Police said that he was depressed as he was forced to take up the course and was unable to cope with the pressure.

It was around 4am, when Purti’s roommate Abhinandan asked him to accompany him downstairs for a walk. Purti reportedly asked him to call a security guard for some help. When Abhinandan went downstairs, Purti reportedly went to the balcony on the fourth floor and jumped. Abhinandan heard a loud thud and found Purti on the ground, bleeding profusely.

Assam Police suspected Tushar had committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of his hostel.

But his parents insisted cops had neglected crucial pieces of evidence. A case was finally registered against unidentified accused on September 26, 2014, at Jalukbari police station, Kamrup district, Guwahati, under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 302 (murder) of IPC, vide FIR number 710/2014.

In August 2016, Assam Police filed a closure report. It read: “The … incident is not the outcome of criminal act of others … though Yadav was a brilliant student, he could not cope with pressure of higher study and there is every possibility he was suffering from mental depression. He might have believed he wouldn’t be able to fulfil expectations which may be the reason for ending life.”

On December 9, 2016, Tushar’ father filed objections to the report. Questions he raised included: Photograph of the site obtained from police show hook and zip of Tushar’s trousers, and buttons of his shirt, were open. There were visible scars on Tushar’s body that hinted he was physically abused before death.

In it’s eight-page verdict, the court of ACJM accused the probe agency of not exploring contradictory statements of witnesses. It dismissed the investigating officer’s contention that Tushar was ill and couldn’t cope with academic pressure, or that no one had heard the sound of the body falling from great height between 12.30am and 1am, especially with the IIT canteen nearby being open till 3am. The autopsy report shows death was due to injury to the vertebrae, but in the photograph, he could be seen with a bent knee, lying on one side. Also, the suicide note was not in Tushar’s handwriting.

The court’s verdict has castigated the police report on several other counts. Tushar’s illness, which is it’s main focus, was for urinary tract infection and typhoid, for which he was in a hospital. But at the time, his doctor did not notice him suffering from mental depression.

 “The court has stated the probe was one-sided, I hope the people responsible will be behind bars soon,” Tushar’s father said.

Bihar student commits suicide in Kota

A student from Bihar committed suicide in Kota yesterday. What made the case suspicious is that the student had come to Kota for coaching, but reportedly never went to any coaching institute in the city.

Police informed that Abhishek Kumar Yadav (17) of the Madhubhani region of Bihar was found hanging in his room in a paying guest accommodation in Mahaveer Nagar First area of the city yesterday. The owner of the PG accommodation informed police about the incident after which they arrived and took the dead body in their possession.

Awadhesh Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) said that the student had filled the admission form of a coaching institute in the past but had not taken admission. “The student was not going to any coaching institute as per the prima facie information,” he said. He had arrived in Kota for coaching for IIT-JEE. No suicide note has been recovered from the room of the student so the reasons behind the suicide are not clear. 

The ASI said that it is not clear what the student was doing in Kota.

The postmortem will be conducted upon the arrival of the parents of the deceased student. Kumar said that the police is investigating the case.
