HYDERABAD: Acting Chief Justice N V Ramana of the AP High Court on Thursday took suo motu cognizance of the report on suicides of students in educational institutions that appeared in this newspaper and issued notices to the state and universities to inform the court the steps being taken by them to prevent such suicides. The TOI report was converted into a public interest litigation and senior counsel D Prakash Reddy appointed amicus curiae to assist the court in the matter which is to be heard on Monday.
There is an urgent need to make universities as congenial and enlightening places of learning for all the students who come from diverse socio economic backgrounds, Justice Ramana said. Notices were issued to the state government, the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the registrars of all the universities in Hyderabad and Cyberabad to convey to the court by Monday the methods in which they are extending support to depression hit students in their respective campuses .
