CHENNAI: A final year IIT-Madras student was on Monday found hanging in his hostel room, in a suspected second such suicide in less than a month in the prestigious institution.
Commenting on the incident, professors told the police that he was a bright student and showed no symptoms of academic or exam-related stress. However, police sources said victim Rahul G Prasad’s call records indicated frequent conversations with a girl until September.
Another aspect that has caught the attention of his friends is Rahul’s YouTube profile, which indicates that he created a playlist titled “The End” on Sunday prior to his suicide. He added only one video to the playlist — a song titled Taro by an English Indie rock band alt-J (?). It is a song about a war photojournalist couple, Gerda Taro and her romantic interest Robert Capa, who never married as Taro refused his proposal and died in their line of work. The song about fear and love is popular for its references alluding to a reunion only in death. “His profile name on the LAN was animaldude and he used to share quite a lot of interesting stuff,” a student said.
Rahul’s parents were informed about his suicide around 3 pm and were expected to reach the institution around 10 pm. His body has been kept in the Royapettah GH mortuary.
