Are we leaving our country a safe place for our kids? - Times of India

Are we leaving our country a safe place for our kids?

August 1, 2019, 4:24 PM IST  in Storiesnow | India | TOI
There are some serious issues in our society that needs to be corrected. The recent suicide of the IIT’ians are very traumatic. Getting into IIT is such a dream for any normal kid. But this IIT kid ends his life in fear of being jobless. The letter he wrote was so painful stating him as a LOSER.
The student suicide rates in India is highly increased recently with higher suicide rates in southern and eastern states of India .As per the stats for every hour, one student commits suicide.
The entire education design in our country is very complex when compared to the other countries. This fierce competition is making the student to fall in depression and to push them beyond their limits. Isn't the whole childhood spoiled with the rigorous burden on them?
As a result, the student who does not have good academic record is considered to be a FAILURE.
The parents are pressurizing the children to work hard for any professional courses. Almost 90% of the kids wanted to become either a Doctor or an engineer. When you ask a kid from any other country. Their response would be a Fireman! Plumber! Carpenter! Mechanic! Teacher and so on.So where is the issue? Is it with us? No, the issue is with the society itself. The plumber who works for my landlord earns three times more than me in the United Kingdom. He owns more than 3 houses. Therefore, this is the main issue in our society.
The wages we pay for these jobs are way too less in India. So, no one wants to be a plumber. The whole perception of these professions are completely degraded. The way we treat these people and the respect we give him are a total dishonour.
Seriously, no one wants our kid to be a carpenter. All we need is a white-collar job. This is not fancy as it sounds.
I am not sure about any pragmatic solution for our country, but the way we perceive different jobs must be changed. The education system needs to revamp in way prioritizing other works as well. The minimum wage for the jobs should be highly increased and the mutual respect should be given to them.  All these cannot be changed overnight. But India must address its Student Suicide Crisis soon.
The government should take affirmative action in stopping the student suicides. The unemployment rate is increasing and it’s always a threatening factor, which leads into bleak future of the students.
In addition, it is our duty to stop pressurizing our young kids on academics.
India needs a change and it needs it now.
