49 - 4th Jan 2009 - IIT student commits suicide - The Hindu

As he was unable to get a job in campus recruitment

KANPUR: Upset over not getting a job through campus recruitment, a post-graduate IIT student allegedly committed suicide here on Saturday by hanging himself.

G. Suman, a second year M.Tech. student from Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room in the afternoon, IIT Kanpur Director Sanjay Govind Panday told PTI.

Suman, pursuing electrical engineering, was upset after he failed to get a job offer during a recent campus recruitment by several multi-nationals, said Mr. Panday.

Suman would rarely meet anyone and often locked himself up in his room.

However, when he did not come to the mess for breakfast and lunch on Saturday, his friends went over to his room which was locked from inside. They saw Suman’s body hanging from the fan, Mr. Panday said. Mr. Panday said Suman had told his friends a number of times about his disappointment over not getting a job due to the economic recession.

“Even after studying so much, we are not able to get a job,” he would say to his friends.

Probe panel formed

A special committee of professors has been set up to probe the incident, Mr. Panday said. Suman’s family has been informed and the body sent for post-mortem. — PTI
