MUMBAI: A 21-year-old engineering student of computer science of Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) tried to kill himself by slashing his wrist with a blade on Sunday afternoon.
According to the police, the youth hails from Andhra Pradesh. He attempted suicide in his hostel room in the afternoon. Ram (name changed) survived because of the timely alertness shown by his hostel mates. "He felt home-sick which made him take such a drastic step," said senior inspector Rajdoot Rupwate of Powai police station.
Rupwate said, "In the suicide note the youth mentioned that he felt depressed and was bored with the lonely life. He wrote that life is so boring after being away from my family. I am ending my life because of the loneliness - bye bye." Ram, a dual degree student, was spending his fifth year at the Powai campus. The dual degree programme allows a student to pursue a bachelor and a master's degree in a span of five years.
The police told 'TOI' that he was alone in the room and after surfing the internet, he went to sleep. Few minutes later, he got up and in a depressed frame of mind removed a blade and slashed his left wrist. As he started shouting in pain, it alerted his friends staying in the next room. They rushed to his room and saw him profusely bleeding. They informed the police about the incident and rushed him to Rajawadi hospital, and later shifted him to Sion hospital.
Prakash Gopalan, dean (student affairs), told 'TOI' that "Investigation from our side is on to find out the reason that made Ram to take such a drastic step."
Students said that for the past few days they saw Ram in a depressed state because he was not doing well in one of the subjects. "But we didn't realise that the matter was so serious."
