A Ph.D student commits suicide in IIT Kanpur campus

In a bizarre incident a Ph.D student with the premier IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Kanpur committed suicide on Monday.
A suicide note has been recovered from the deceased student Abhilash's pocket in which contain some phone numbers. Further details are awaited.
R. K. Bhatt, the investigating officer, with the Kalyanpur Police Station in Kanpur said that Abhilash body was being sent for post-mortem.
"He was a student of Ph.D and had come few days ago. The student has committed suicide. A suicide note has also been found from his pocket which is in English," said R. K. Bhatt, Police Inspector, Kalyanpur Police Station, Kanpur.
Abhilash who hailed from Kerala and was working in Germany had returned to Kanpur a few days ago to complete his Ph.D assignments. He was residing in a room at the IIT hostel. His body was found on the terrace hall of hostel No.4 in the IIT campus.
According to Prabal Sinha, Dean of Student Affairs, IIT Kanpur, Abhilash was a student with IIT Kanpur and had come for viva voce` for Ph.D. A suicide note has also been found from his pocket, which stated about his decision to commit suicide.
" I got information at about 9:45 in the morning, about a body found on the terrace of the Hall No.4. I took some security personnel and the warden along with me and found his body. We informed the police and also called a doctor, who declared that Abhilash had died a few hours ago," said Prabal Sinha, Dean of Student Affairs, IIT Kanpur.
The latest incident has taken the tally of IIT Kanpur students committing suicide to three this year.
Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is one of the premier institutions established by the Government of India. The aim of the Institute is to provide meaningful education, to conduct original research of the highest standard and to provide leadership in technological innovation for the industrial growth of the country.
The Institute began functioning in the borrowed building of Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in 1959 with 100 students and a small faculty. The Institute now has its own sprawling residential campus, about 1450 undergraduate and 850 postgraduate students, 300 faculties and more than 1500 supporting staff. (ANI)
