Kanpur: A PhD research scholar killed himself by consuming cyanide at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur on Monday, police said.
 
Abhilash G J Pillai, 28, was found dead on the terrace of hostel number four. Police found cyanide tablets and a suicide note in which Abhilash, a Keralaite, has reportedly said that the he wanted to commit suicide earlier but waited till his younger brother’s marriage was decided.
 
Abhilash's father G J Pillai, who works with the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited in Haridwar district, has been informed.
 
Abhilash had recently visited Germany as part of his PhD programme and his viva-voce was scheduled for November 9.
 
The local police station has registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem. 

Abhilash, who was studying for his doctorate in chemical engineering, is the third student at IIT Kanpur to have committed suicide since November.
 
On May 3, engineering student Shailesh Sharma hung himself from a fan in a hostel room after failing in exams.
Engineering student Swapnil jumped from the fifth floor of a building on the campus in November 2005.
