KANPUR: An 18-year-old IIT-JEE aspirant committed suicide by hanging himself under the Naubasta police station here on Monday morning.
According to reports, the police identified the deceased as Prateek Kumar Bajpai, son of Vinod Kumar Bajpai, a resident of Gulmohar Nagar locality.
The deceased Prateek was a Class XII student of a local public school in the city. No suicide note has been found. His friends said they were completely clueless about any possible reason, for he secured 70 per cent marks in high school, was a brilliant student, and was an IIT-JEE aspirant.
Police officers said the boy had not left any suicide note and the exact reason behind Prateek's extreme step was yet to be ascertained. The kin of the deceased, however, said that only on Sunday he had appeared for IIT-JEE entrance test and he was feeling a little low. This was his first attempt at the IIT-JEE entrance test.
A police officer said Prateek did not come out of his room despite repeated knocks. "His family members then called up the neighbours, who then broke open the doors only to find him hanging from the ceiling of the room," the officer said.
The kin said that they had come from the market last evening and Prateek seemed normal. "He had his breakfast and went inside his room on Monday morning. When he did not come for quite sometime, I went looking for him and found the door locked from inside following which police was informed," said victim's mother Shashi Bajpai. A doctor, who lives nearby confirmed that he was dead, the kin added.
Another friend of the deceased said, "He was really into his studies; he took the IIT-JEE entrance coaching." Prateek's father Vinod Kumar Bajpai works with a Central Bank branch in Lucknow.
"We are yet to lodge a case in this regard but the investigations have confirmed that the deceased was depressed. However, we will investigate the case once the autopsy report arrives," said a police official.
