A final year BTech student of IIT Kanpur allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room on Tuesday. It was the eighth suspected case of suicide on the IIT-K campus in the last five years.
The body of Madhuri Saale, in her early twenties, was found hanging in the room. She belonged to Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh and was a student of civil engineering. The reason behind the suicide could not be known.
The director of the institute, S.D. Dhande, said, "A fourth year civil engineering student of our institute has been found dead. Initial investigations suggest that she has committed suicide."
According to IIT-K authorities, Saale did not leave any suicide note. Even her academic record was reported good ruling out the possibility of not performing well in academics as the reason.
However, the IIT-K authorities have been under scrutiny now as they opened the door of her room without informing the police. Even the media was not allowed near the room.
A three-member committee has been set up by the IIT administration to probe the death of the girl.
